Quick links. Before posting, please read the troubleshooting guide. A large part of all reported issues are already described in detail here. Also, some information on things is misleading, conflicting and so forth. So this guide will explain how I set this up using the advice from previous guides and incorporating my own trial and error.
Also, this guide jsut represents how I did it. As always in IT and for anyone who's taken a MS exam there's more than one right answer. That said, if anyone has any comments or advice for a more efficient, better, smarter way to do this, please post. Install hMailServer. The fineries of this are covered in great detail elsewhere. Disable all anti-spam features of the software. In this example I use port At this time it is 5.
Get the MSI version of the installer, and take note there are x86 and x64 versions. This example used the x86 version. Install ActivePerl. We've since moved on to a Barracuda VM that wasn't too expensive. It works as well as ASSP but is a little less featured.
However ASSP required a bit of babying to keep it current and smooth, especially in the Bayesian areas, where Barracuda is tied to their signature downloads. Similar results but less of my time worrying about email. Thanks JN Patrick, this helps a lot. If I go ahead and use it I will reference your link. But it does sound like a lot "babying" so it probably is much cheaper to outsource compared to what it would cost for me to be "babying" it.
Assp should be installed in your dmz or Internet connection so it can take advantage of ip lookup of connecting mail server. You would not want your exchange server in the dmz. You can run assp on a Linux box for stability and exchange memory usage would not effect it. Any restarts for updates do not effect the exchange box. You can keep port 25 on internal ip address for any internal smtp systems.
As above any Linux will work as it is all ip address and port based no login from ad required. Documentation is very light for assp but some google searches will show some simple install instructions. Do this by opening a command prompt and typing perl. When you access the front page click on the left no network setup and check the box labaled As a Service.
Then close the browser, then close the command window that was left open after running assp. Then go to services control panel and start the service. In your mail server all that needs to be changed is the port that it listens for smtp connections from the internet. This will get you started up and running and collecting emails for your bayesian statistics.
I will write a more advanced guide going over more of the advanced features.
